More than 1.54 million people in Zhejiang Province, eastern China and 252,000 Shanghai residents were evacuated after the Haikui storm hit Zhejiang on August 7, Xinhua quoted local authorities as saying.

The local observatory said that the storm brought rain and flooding, leaving hundreds of people stranded. The National Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China have sent teams to direct the rescue work and initiate emergency response.

Local governments also deducted funds for disaster mitigation and continued monitoring of the storm.

Haikui is the third tropical storm to land on the east coast of China in just a week, after the storm of Saola and Damrey swept through the area, killing at least 23 people.
