Coffee helps reduce the risk of suicide

Scientists from Harvard Medical School (HSPH) analyzed data of 43,599 men from 1988 to 2008, and 73,820 women from 1992 to 2008.

Drinking a cup of coffee every day can help reduce 50% suicide rate for both men and women.

According to the study, coffee has the effect of stimulating the central nervous system, which acts as a mild antidepressant by increasing the activity of the brain neurotransmitter system with serotonin , dopamine and noradrenaline.

To assess the correlation between coffee consumption and suicide risk, Harvard University of Public Health (HSPH) scientists analyzed data of 43,599 men from 1988 to 2008, and 73,820. women from 1992 to 2008. In addition, during the period from 1993 to 2007, researchers also collected more information at 91,005 women.

The study participants were then assessed through a questionnaire about the effects of caffeine and caffeine removal. As a result, through many types of coffee at different caffeine levels, researchers recorded 277 suicidal deaths. Currently the consumption of coffee is affected by many different sources of caffeine such as other drinks, chocolate and tea.

Michel Lucas, a researcher at the HSPH Nutrition Department, said that unlike many previous studies, this study was conducted on both caffeinated and non-caffeinated beverages. Later, the scientists concluded that caffeine is the most likely substance for presumed protective effects, namely caffeine from coffee.

Although this is an accurate study and clear evidence, the scientific community does not encourage depressed people to use more coffee.
