A large number of dead fish were discovered in southern California, with the cause believed to be due to lack of oxygen.
The mass death phenomenon was discovered on the night of May 17 at Marina Del Rey. The number of dead fish is estimated at 50,000-70,000, including anchovies, rays, angel sharks and many other species.
According to the description of the local people, dead fish float to the surface of the water, covering a corner of the port, attracting many birds to gather near this area to feed. By the afternoon of May 18, about three tons of fish were picked up from the water.
"Warmer temperatures can accelerate the development of algae blooms at a faster rate, making them absorb more oxygen," explains Matthew King, a researcher at Heal the Bay. Hot weather will also reduce the amount of oxygen in the water lower than normal weather conditions. This may be the cause of fish lack of oxygen and death.
"I've been here for 20 years and this is the first time I witnessed a large number of dead fish like this," Huffington Post quoted a local resident named Tom Difloure as saying.
The science of the Fish and Wildlife Organization brought these fish samples to the laboratory to determine the exact cause.
