According to a study published by the Pennsylvania State University (USA) on December 23, researchers in this country have developed a device that allows quick identification of virus types .
An estimated 1.67 million viruses are unknown in animals, with some of which can transmit disease to humans.
This device is called VIRRION.(Artwork: indiatimes).
Several viruses that can be transmitted to humans , such as H5N1 , Zika and Ebola, have caused outbreaks of disease and have been responsible for many deaths.
Therefore, researchers at Pennsylvania State University and New York University have developed a handheld device that can quickly test viruses for an affordable price. This device is called VIRRION.
Because of its small size and low production cost, this type of device will not only be used in clinics, but also in remote locations where outbreaks of pandemic occur.
Professor Mauricio Terrones of Pennsylvania State University said the device uses a network of nanotubes designed to be the same size as some viruses.
With Raman spectroscopy technology , the device can identify viruses based on their vibrations.
According to the researchers, VIRRION is able to quickly acquire many viruses from any sample, whether in a normal environment or a laboratory.
In addition, the scientists hope to use this device to identify the infected portion of the virus, thereby effectively and timely handling when the virus has evolved.
