Discover beautiful 5,000-year-old underwater city in Turkey
City workers discovered evidence of an ancient civilization as they sought solutions for local flooding.
This incredible discovery made by workers in the city is trying to understand why some houses in the Avanos district of Nevşehir province are submerged in water.
Using heavy machinery to investigate a network of flooded tunnels running underneath the town, they found the remains of an ancient city preserved in clear water.
New entrance to the old city was discovered.
According to local media, the long-lost underground labyrinth consists of houses and places of worship within five-kilometer tunnels.
A small statue was also found during the first expedition of this archeological wonder.
According to a local resident, this long-lost city was actually found for the first time 25 years ago when a child fell into one of the tunnels.
However, these tunnels were then fully sealed to prevent subsequent accidents and it has not been processed and has not been discovered since then.
The mayor of the town of Calis, Kazım Yılmaz, said he believed the city had a total area of 1.2 million square meters, Anadolu reported.
He added the town would ask for the help of the Turkish Ministry of Culture to draw water from the tunnels in an attempt to open the door to tourists.
This is not the first time that remnants of ancient civilizations have been found underwater.
In 2017, a Roman city lost for centuries was found sinking near Napoli.
