A recent discovery of fossil dinosaurs in Spain has led to a surprising discovery: It is not only the previously undiscovered species, but also a new generation of dinosaurs.

Earlier this week, Spanish researchers announced two "armored" dinosaur skeletons excavated from coal mines in Teruel, a town in the north of the country. The new specimen shows the appearance of an "armored" dinosaur genus in the Ankylosauria group, but researchers soon realized that they were evidence of something completely different than before.

"Armored" dinosaur

Scientists have described this study in PLoS One and call it an unprecedented species, Europelta carbonensis . Like other giant lizard dinosaurs in the nodosaurid family, Europelta is a herbivore and scaly skin. But the unique feature of this dinosaur is that the fins bend to the back of the head and have a strong pelvic bone to distinguish it from other nodosaurids.

Researchers estimate that the Europelta dinosaur is at least 5 meters long, weighs about two tons and thrives about 110 -113 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. This made Europelta the oldest dinosaur discovered in Europe.

Scientists believe that the ancestors of the dinosaur nodosaurid were 'armored' dinosaurs, mainly living in Europe and North America until they became extinct about 118 million years ago.

Here are some pictures of the dinosaurs belonging to them on:
