Discovered frogs as small as half a candy

The world's smallest frog, half the size of a candy, has been discovered by scientists in the rainforest on the island of Papua New Guinea.

The team from the Louisiana Museum of Natural Science (USA) has discovered a new reddish-brown tiny frog, sitting on a dry leaf in a tropical forest on the island of Papua New Guinea. .

The new frog, named Paedophryne amanuensis , has a body size of about 7mm. This is considered the smallest of 60,000 vertebrate species in the world. The world's smallest vertebrate was a fish in Indonesia with a body length of about 7.9mm.

Professor Chris Austin, from the University of Louisiana and a member of the research team, thinks that tiny frogs are adapted to food chains that are not exploited by larger carnivores.
