Agricultural by-products such as straw, corn stalks . are incubated with an appropriate amount of EM probiotics to become nutritious food for cows. Cow manure is used to fertilize rice, vegetables and fish food. Cow urine is combined with EM probiotics used to irrigate vegetables and colors, saving 90% of urea fertilizer. That is the model of garden-pond-barn-field (VACR) which is being applied quite effectively in Bac Lieu province.
Mr. Van Thao in Cong Dien hamlet, Vinh Trach commune, Bac Lieu town, Bac Lieu province is one of 5 households in Vinh Trach commune applying VACR model. At the field seminar held in mid-November 2006, the report of his model implementation attracted the attention of more than 40 farmers and agricultural officials. When visiting directly, VACR model of Mr. Thao's family persuaded farmers: big herds are beautiful and healthy; the barn is clean, odorless; rice and vegetables, bright green color; fish ponds are waiting for harvest.
During the implementation of the VACR model, Mr. Thao kept straw and corn stalks with an amount of EM probiotics suitable for cattle feed. Cow urine was mixed with EM preparations, so there was no odor and became organic protein to irrigate vegetables. 1 piece of land he planted 40 canola 18m long. In the past, every crop, he spent about 40-45 kg of urea / public. Currently, he only uses 5-7kg of urea / public with 10 liters of cow urine and 1 liter of EM preparations, saving about 200,000 VND. One year he grew from 4-5 crops, the savings amounted to millions. Mr. Thao compares: 'Using urea too much, vegetables quickly become deep and rot, and cannot last long. In particular, using cow urine mixed with EM preparations and a few insecticides on vegetables have the effect of repelling harmful insects. After cleaning, just use about 200cc of EM products to mix with half a barrel of water, evenly water in the barn, there is no bad smell.
Mr. Thao composted the manure with EM product into organic fertilizer, applied it to soil for growing vegetables and rice before sowing, helping the plant to grow well. In addition, he also uses cow dung as a food for fish, taking advantage of green vegetables without spending money to buy industrial food. Mr. Thao also regularly uses EM products around the pond to clean the bottom of the shirt and remove the odor in the water. Mr. Thao's model has not reached the time of full harvest, has not yet calculated the profit, but he affirmed: 'In the short term, I see the model brings many practical benefits such as limiting the use of chemical fertilizers, vegetables with less pests and diseases should use less pesticides; vegetables can be stored for a long time and sell more. Thanks to utilizing cow dung and urine, production costs are saved and the environment is not affected '.
The researcher of VACR model is Dr. Le Thi Du , Head of Department of Seed Technology, Mekong Delta Rice Institute. VACR is the research content of the project 'Application of integrated agricultural production model, diversification of livestock and plants for production areas is still difficult' by the Department of Science and Technology of Bac Lieu province to finance and master Management, Center for Clean Agriculture Research and Development is the unit to take charge of implementation. The project has been implemented from 2005 to 2007. According to Dr. Le Thi Du, chair of the project, to implement an effective VACR model, it is necessary to have EM probiotics.
EM products are widely sold on the market, produced by fermentation microbiology of beneficial microorganisms: photosynthetic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, yeast, bacteriophage and filamentous fungi ( Japanese technology). These microorganisms work to convert indigestible substances into easily digested substances, increase nutrition, turn agricultural residues such as straw, corn stalks into food with high nutrient content, suitable for cows. EM preparations have the effect of eliminating bad smell of cattle and poultry cages; decomposing organic matter, uneaten feed and toxic substances such as NH 3 , NO 2 , H 2 S in aquaculture ponds, animal urine; stimulate pet digestive system thanks to biological enzyme system; Improve resistance for pet body. Dr. Le Thi Du said: 'In order to increase agricultural quality and ensure other requirements, the use of organic fertilizers and cow dung requires the use of microbiological technology (combined with EM preparations). When fermenting, useful microorganisms act to produce high heat, which can kill pathogenic microorganisms, limit infection and reduce the odor of feces' .
VACR is a closed integrated agricultural production model, suitable for agricultural production areas with many difficulties, helping farmers to destroy rice monoculture, diversifying income sources . Mr. Nguyen Phu Cuong, Vice Chairman of Vinh Trach Commune People's Committee, said: 'VACR is a new model and has many practical effects. The CPC will coordinate with farmers 'associations at all levels to encourage and facilitate farmers to develop this model.' According to Mr. Phan Duy Tan, Director of Bac Lieu Department of Science and Technology, for 5 households implementing the demonstration model, the Department will recover 40% of the funding that supported the implementation of the model when the research topic finish. At the same time, it will assist localities to expand this model to help farmers raise awareness, reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and save production costs.
From the implementation results in Vinh Trach commune, Bac Lieu town, Department of Science and Technology of Bac Lieu province continued to coordinate with the project management board to replicate this model in Vinh Loi district, Bac Lieu province. It is expected that the model will be implemented at the beginning of 2007.
