England: New foot and mouth disease outbreak appears
Cattle on a farm in Surrey, in the south of England, are about to be killed after authorities have confirmed that the new foot and mouth outbreak has appeared here, the Agriculture Department announced on September 12. .
According to the Department of Agriculture, all shipments of cows, pigs, sheep and other ruminants are banned in England, Scotland and Wales after the veterinary agency confirms preliminary tests to test positive for Foot and mouth disease in cattle at a farm in Surrey. About 20 cows on this farm are about to be killed to prevent spreading the disease. The source of the virus is being identified.
The farm was translated about 50 kilometers away from the area where two farms appeared last month. In addition, on the afternoon of the same day, a suspected case of a foot-and-mouth virus was alerted on a farm in Norfolk County, eastern England. An isolation belt was quickly established around the farm and a checkpoint was placed at the suspected location.
Immediately after the discovery of a new outbreak in the UK, the EU decided to ban the export of meat, dairy products and cattle to the UK. This new ban comes into effect until October 15.
At the end of last week, the British government announced it had eliminated the disease.
