The device uses electronic silicon carbide (SiC) technology , which can measure the smallest changes of volcanic gases such as CO2 and sulfur gas. Wireless sensors will provide real-time event data that will take place on the surface, providing important information about volcanic activity and any imminent eruptions.
Due to its more unified and stable molecular structure than silicon, silicon carbide has a high and wide radiation amplitude, opening up many possibilities for applications in the nuclear industry.
The team has developed the necessary components and is currently integrating them into an iPhone-sized device, which can be used in a variety of locations such as power plants, aircraft engines and volcanoes.
Dr. Alton Horsfall, the leader in silicon carbide, explains: ' At this point, we have no way to accurately monitor the situation inside a volcano. Most of the collected data is post-eruption. By using silicon carbide technology, we hope to develop a wireless communication system that can accurately collect and transmit chemical data from the deepest levels of a volcano ".
