This is a five-year study by Australian scientists published by Monash University on February 21.
After 5 years, the group with gastric ligation surgery lost an average of 12.2% of body weight.
The study was conducted for 1 group of patients with gastric ligation surgery and 1 other group with conventional medical treatment only. Stomach surgery allows the patient to limit the amount of food to avoid eating.
Research results show that after 5 years, the group with gastric ligation surgery lost an average of 12.2% of body weight, while the other group only lost an average of 1.8% of body weight.
After 5 years, nearly 25% of the surgical group had remission of diabetes, compared with only 9% in the other group.
According to lead researcher John Wentworth, the risk of diabetes-related health problems as well as reduced medication needs in people with gastric ligation.
He also said that these people have a happier, healthier and less painful life.
The study adds that the average cost of gastric ligation in Australia is $ 9,000.
