Climate change (CC) makes rain and floods occur more frequently. Therefore, Hanoi needs to anticipate and have a plan to control the hazards during operation of the water supply system.

This is the recommendation of scientists at the workshop: 'Climate change and urban water systems, appropriate adaptation and management solutions' by the University of Tokyo, Japan and Vietnam National University of Civil Engineering. Nam held March 6 in Hanoi.

The 2008 flood caused Hanoi to flood for many days
has made the authorities also embarrassed.

According to Dr. Nguyen Tien Giang, Hanoi National University, there is a solution to fight against floods caused by in-field rain based mainly on the drainage system of Hanoi city and the Nhue-Day river basin. The lake system regulating Hanoi's inner city also contributes a part to the city's flood-proofing process, but is increasingly narrowed. Therefore, it is necessary to re-examine Hanoi's water supply and drainage system and take appropriate measures when bad situation occurs.

One fact pointed out by Dr. Pham Ngoc Thai, Vietnam Water Supply and Sewerage Association, developing water supply system in the context of rapid urbanization and climate change is more difficult. The reason is that the development on the basis of improving and expanding urban water supply systems has been built in the past while Hanoi lacks an existing water supply network. Therefore, it is necessary to anticipate and plan for the control of hazards, preventing it from waiting until the incident occurs to intervene.

In Hanoi, the flooded map of the whole city corresponding to the heavy rain in November 2008 has been built to show that flooding occurs almost everywhere. At that time, the intervention measures expressed confusion, plus the paralysis and overload of many water supply and drainage points, causing Hanoi to flood for many days. According to experts, this is the most obvious lesson and verification for Hanoi to immediately embark on this work before the incident occurs.
