High-yield Hoang Long sweet potato

Experimental Center for High-Tech Agricultural Biology of the Institute of Agricultural Genetics tested and restored the success of Hoang Long sweet potato variety for high productivity and quality on an area of 3 hectares in Yen Quang and Phu Son communes, Nho Quan district, Ninh Binh province.

Hoang Long sweet potato , a specialty tree of Ninh Binh province, has parsley, light yellow color, fleshy, sweet and characteristic aroma. This variety is easy to grow, less invested, suitable for soil and economic conditions of farmers, so it is grown by local people in many communes and brings a good income.

However, during the production process, farmers often use manual breeding by cutting sweet potato vines. This is the main reason leading to the situation of sweet potato variety Hoang Long gradually degraded and seriously mixed.

Topic: 'Restoring Hoang Long sweet potato variety by traditional methods combined with using molecular markers to increase productivity and quality of commercial seed sources in Ninh Binh province' is done by the method of selection filter the best varieties over two seasons and propagate from vines and tubers.

The project management board has grown, monitored and evaluated some characteristics of the variety, actual components of productivity and productivity, and then selected good quality varieties to conduct restoration. From the original varieties, the research team selected nearly 140 lines of sweet potato with good yields to continue planting season 2.

After applying molecular marker technique to evaluate the genetic similarity of selected strains in season 2, the results selected 70 lines of sweet potato to be recovered.

These are sweet potato lines with outstanding yield and quality compared to the original varieties. Planting sweet potatoes that have been rehabilitated on the area of 3 hectares of farmers, the project team has achieved positive results, the yield of 70 sweet potato lines selected in season 2 is stable in about 22 tons to 23 tons / ha, an increase of nearly 5 tons compared to the original yield.

In the winter crop of 2013, the project management board will build a breeding garden to produce 2 tons of seedlings and tubers from selected season 2 lines on an area of 2 ha, and build a technical guideline on cultivating potato Hoang Long to provide people.

Master Trinh Thi Thanh Huong, Deputy Director of the Center for High-Tech Biological Agricultural Experiments and chair of the project, said: The time to implement the restoration of Hoang Long sweet potato variety has been shortened by using technology. molecular markers, not only contribute to the local specialty crop, but also promote the long-standing experience and practices of sweet potato cultivation of the people, helping to increase income in their fields.
