Osteoporosis is not diagnosed promptly and can only be detected after bones have weakened and lead to fractures.

By analyzing the calcium isotopes in urine , medical experts can fully diagnose the disease at the earliest stage because each isotope has a certain number of neurons.

The constant balance of different isotopes when bones are destroyed and formed is an indicator of timely detection of changes in bone density at an early stage.

In experiments with volunteers, new techniques have shown that bone loss can be detected before leading to osteoporosis.

"If the mode of operation is effective, it will be put into clinical use ," said Professor Ariel Anbar, the lead researcher.

Scientists say the method also helps detect diseases that affect bones including cancer.

This is a collaboration between scientists at Arizona State University and NASA. NASA believes that astronauts can suffer from this disease due to the extremely small gravity environment in space.
