On August 23, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano affirmed that the IAEA's role in ensuring global nuclear safety must be strengthened although it basically ensures county safety. It is the responsibility of the nations that use nuclear energy.

Mr. Amano emphasized that the IAEA is looking for measures to strengthen global nuclear safety standards to ensure nuclear power plants effectively fend off extreme events such as earthquakes, tsunamis . so that nuclear disaster like Fukushima (Japan) has not recurred recently.

However, Mr. Amano noted that the cost of implementing new nuclear safety standards needs to be reasonable, effective and within the financial capacity of countries.

The IAEA Director-General said that although many countries are reviewing options for developing nuclear energy, climate change and the urgent need for energy for economic development make nuclear energy attractive. with many countries.

The action plan will be approved by the IAEA's 151 member countries conference in August, suggesting a series of measures in 10 areas of operation and safety of reactors to enhance nuclear safety. .

IAEA is responsible for overseeing compliance with new nuclear safety standards and regulations for global nuclear reactors.

Under this action plan, 10% of the 440 active nuclear reactors in the world will be monitored according to new safety standards in the next 3 years.

According to IAEA data, although Germany has decided to close all German nuclear power plants in 2022 and Italy has approved a referendum to ban nuclear energy development in the coming decades. Currently, 29 countries are still using nuclear power, but the number of developing countries will increase by 25 more by 2030.
