Intel founder Gordon Moore and his wife, Betty, donated $ 200 million to scientists to build the world's largest optical telescope.
According to the Los Angeles Times on December 6, the telescope will have a glass of nearly 30.5m in diameter and three times larger than the Keck telescope - the world's largest telescope. This amount was transferred to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the University of California, USA.
Caltech officials said the total cost to build the telescope is expected to be about $ 300 million.'We and our colleagues are eager to create a historic device that allows us to observe the universe further,' said Caltech president Jean-Lou Chameau.
The final design of this telescope, known as the 30m telescope, will be completed in March 2009 and construction will soon begin soon. The project is expected to be completed in 2017.
Gary Sanders, Caltech's project manager, said there are five locations being targeted for a 30-meter telescope, including three locations in Chile, one in Baja California and one in Mauna Kea, Hawaii.
