Israeli students research and produce honey-free honey
Israeli students have developed a new technology to produce bee-free honey through the use of genetically modified bacteria.
According to the Israeli Institute of Technology, Israeli students have developed a new technology to produce honey without bees through the use of genetically modified bacteria.
The amazing properties of honey make it extremely appealing in areas such as pharmaceutical manufacturing, cosmetics and food industry. However, the expansion of honey production will harm this species and the environment, while reducing the number of bees worldwide.
Bile-free honey is produced by bacillus subtilis.
Therefore, this new type of honey-free honey will help address these negative effects. The honey is made using bacillus subtilis bacteria, and these bacteria have learned how to produce honey through reprogramming in the lab.
Normally, to digest and preserve the amount of pollen collected, bees use special enzymes in the stomach to turn this pollen into honey. With the new method, bacteria will be separated from the end product by using a membrane filter.
Students also designed synthetic circuits to regulate the replication of necessary enzymes, thereby controlling the quality of the final product of bile such as flavor or necessary applications.
The results confirm that the product could open up new fields of honey production without harming bees and could be applied in the field of medicine and food.
