By the end of this year, media owners in Malaysia will receive a chip biometric tag when building a new road tax.

Biometric sized credit cards, including fingerprint details and thumbnails, as well as vehicle information. Personal details will be linked to the National Registration Authority of Malaysia to prevent registration card fraud.

The biometric identification card will make it easier for car owners to register their vehicles safely, Chan said. Biometric cards will function as an ATM card. Vehicle owners will be able to renew their driving license and build a new road tax without having to go to the tax office.

At the same time, biometric registration cards will help to prevent theft and falsification of vehicle registration papers. Currently, there are a total of 15 million registered vehicles in Malaysia.

According to the General Insurance Association of Malaysia, in 2000, 2.3 million vehicles were stolen every hour. In 2004, the number of stolen vehicles increased 10 times, totaling more than RM750 million (ringgit - Malaysian money).
