As explained by the staff in the National Park, they are not sea snakes or seaworms : " Nereocystis luetkeana is representative of brown algae. In our waters, this species immigrates from" America ", they are published along North America's Pacific coast from Unalashka Island to California ".

The branches of this algae are up to 25 meters long and gradually expand on the top. At the end of the algae is a bubble of up to 20 centimeters in diameter, like a snake's head. From there grow branches with long leaves.

Nereocystis is an algae that lives in a year at depths of up to 20 meters. They began to develop in February, and in December they separated from the ground and "traveled on a trip across the Pacific". Usually, the bodies of these algae are washed ashore on the Aleutian and Commander Islands.
