Gladys Triveno, Peru's Minister of Industry and Fisheries, announced that the government is investigating the cause of the mass of crustaceans.
Yuri Hooker, a biologist at Cayetano Heredia University in Peru, said that the crustaceans on the coast were a red mollusk with an average length of 3cm.
'They are distributed from the Chilean coast to the northern coast of Peru. It is very likely that they died due to the rising temperature of the Pacific water , ' Hooker commented.
Hooker explains that when ocean water becomes warmer, mollusks - which live far from the shore - will move closer to the shore to avoid warm currents. They kept swimming toward the shore until they washed up on the beach and stuck there.
The incident occurred in the context of nearly 900 dolphin corpses and about 5,000 seabird corpses washed into Peru's northern coastal region from February to April. naturally, seabirds die due to rising Pacific water temperatures, making bird food scarce. Environmental protection organizations claim that dolphins die due to offshore oil and gas exploration activities.
