Mr. Marcelo Ebrard, the new mayor of this leading Latin American city, said he hoped to bring high-speed wireless service to 8.7 million people, even if Mexico City was struggling to providing basic services such as electricity and water.
On Monday, Marcelo Ebrard made a deal with ZTE Corp. China to set up wireless broadband to connect schools, government agencies and thousands of city surveillance cameras.
" The city government is gaining the highest interest for this project ." Mr. Ebrard said. " This project will be launched in the next few months ."
Speaking to journalists soon after, Mr. Ebrard hoped the high-speed wireless Internet service would quickly expand across the city.
Mr. Marcelo Ebrard, (in the middle), led a daily bicycle movement in Mexico City, on April 2, 2007.
This will be a heavy task for Mexico City, the city is dealing with issues like emissions, messy traffic and heterogeneous public services - in some places there is no public service. .
Due to deprivation, low pressure and overexploitation, most of the surrounding areas still rely on water trucks. Meanwhile, the old power infrastructure is the cause of frequent blackouts, even in the central districts.
Since taking office in December last year, Mr. Ebrard has launched ambitious plans for the modern city of Mexico City, with a tendency to follow the capitals of powerful countries around the world.
His government recently announced that it will follow the model of cities like Paris and Berlin, to build artificial beaches in the summer. Also on the second day, he launched a campaign to encourage city officials to ride bicycles once a month.
