Video: Monkey cracks a nut shell
The video is made under the research project of capuchin monkey (Cebus libidinosus), living in the forest area of the state of Piauí, Brazil. In the study, experts from the University of Georgia, Madhur Mangalam, and colleagues observed the behavior of 14 monkeys.
According to the Huffington Post, they were surprised to find that monkeys not only banged on the stone floor until they cracked. Instead, they examine the seed coat after each action taken and skillfully adjust the impact force. Thanks to that, the monkey can save energy and avoid breaking the inner core.
"It was a surprise when we saw the monkeys adjusting their behavior systematically, based on the status of the seed shell after each previous hit," Mangalam said.
This is not the first time scientists have discovered the special ability of monkeys. Some previous studies have shown that they can do math.
