Whales stranded and drifted to the coast of Japan

The flock of whales stranded on the coast in Hokota City, Ibaraki Prefecture, about 100 km northeast of Tokyo, from yesterday morning.

"We have seen one or two whales drifting ashore every year, but this is the first time we have discovered more than 100 whales on the beach," said an officer of the coast patrol.

According to AFP, despite efforts to bring them back to the underwater environment, many have been pushed to shore because of rising tide.Rescue forces were present soon after, helping them to keep cold and moisturize, but some died.

Melon head whales have a close relationship with the dolphin family . They usually live in deep waters of Japan and can grow 2-3 meters in length.
