New generation Wi-Fi technology will soon be used to bring IPTV TV to every corner of the house.

Airgo Networks maker Wi-Fi chip maker said its latest generation wireless technology will be used to relay IPTV television from computers to the entire home.

Collaborating on this project is Caton Overseas, a Chinese manufacturer of satellite and cable television receivers, and STMicroelectronics, a chip vendor for digital record makers. like Siemens and Cisco Systems.

Airgo's high-performance Wi-Fi chips use technology called MIMO, which means "multiple inputs - multiple outputs", enabling enhanced Wi-Fi coverage and signaling. MIMO is currently the main platform of the latest generation Wi-Fi standard - 802.11n.

Performance barrier

Now Airgo says it has revised MIMO so that all three factors of quality, coverage area and signal stability are high enough to provide high quality video. The company's new generation chip, called True MIMO Gen3, provides data transfer speeds up to 240mb / s when tested in a 300-square-meter model house. This speed is fast enough to simultaneously transmit 3 high-definition TV channels.

Mobile networks, such as AT&T and Verizon, are investing billions of dollars to upgrade the system, to provide Internet TV (IPTV) services to mass users. However, the vast majority of households today do not have Ethernet cables, which are used to provide IP services so far.

Therefore, one of the barriers that mobile networks face when providing IPTV is to find ways to relay this service to multiple TV screens at the same time.

Another approach

Wi-Fi is a good alternative to Ethernet cables, but until recently, the technology was not strong enough and the reliability to mobilize a heavy task like high-definition video transmission.

" At this time, the only way for many TVs to connect to IPTV services is to use wires. But in the future, wireless technologies will be able to replace, " Airgo's marketing manager to speak.

Another company, Ruckus Wireless, also specializes in Wi-Fi optimization for video publishing. But Airgo said that Ruckus used another method: improving performance with an old technology.

" Ruckus's technology is like resetting the engine of a shabby car. What we do is replace the entire engine with a new, more powerful one ."
