New surgical method to treat congenital heart disease

Previously, to treat congenital heart disease, tetanus of Fallot, people had right ventricular opening surgery. Patients often have heart failure later. Currently, HCMC cardiologists use new surgery through the atria and pulmonary arteries.

Right from birth in 1977, baby Ngo Quoc Vuong in Tra Vinh province wore a congenital heart disease, four diseases of Fallot. Little Vuong suffered from four heart damage: ventricular septal defect, pulmonary artery stenosis, aortic aorta, and thickening of the right ventricle.

Ms. Cao Thi Thu Trang, mother of Vuong, said that due to the disease, Vuong was often tired, went from bed to the door and stood up with a short breath. 10 years old, but Vuong is only in grade 2.

Trang said that she has been undergoing cardiac surgery for 4 years, but on May 4, Vuong was newly operated by doctors of the Department of Cardiology and Cardiology at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Currently, baby Vuong is fresh and his heart beats back to normal.

Previously, with the cases of four Fallot syndrome, people often opened the right ventricle to correct the defects in the heart. When opened like this, the heart will suffer a wound on the ventricular wall, thus affecting the contraction of the heart muscle. Patients often suffer from heart failure after surgery.

In recent years, Ho Chi Minh City Heart Institute has implemented a technique to repair Fallot deformities without going through the right ventricle but through the right atrium and pulmonary artery. This method helps preserve the function of the heart muscle.

Currently, in addition to Heart Institute, this new technique is also being transferred to the Department of Cardiology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Doctor Nguyen Hoang Dinh, Head of the Department of Cardiology, Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, said that new techniques through the right atrial and pulmonary arteries are more difficult, technicians need to be thoroughly trained and methodical. France, otherwise it will not fix all the malformations of the Fallot syndrome.

The surgery time between the new technique and the old technique is not different from 3-4 hours. The current cost for a heart surgery like this is 40-45 million VND.

Fallot is one of the most common purple congenital heart disease, accounting for about 10% of all congenital heart diseases. It is a malformation related to the incomplete development of the cardiovascular system during fetal time.

This disease can lead to complications such as severe purple fever leading to death, stroke, brain abscess, pulmonary tuberculosis, infection and heart failure as you get older.
