One more scorpion was discovered in Vietnam

The Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources has just announced a new scorpion species found in Dien Bien.

The new species has a scientific name, Chaerilus pathom Lourenco & Pham , discovered by Dr. Pham Dinh Sac (Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources) and Dr. Wilson Lourenco (Paris Natural History Museum) during the examination. close to Pa Thom cave area, Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province.

According to the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the scorpion belongs to the Chaerilidae family. They are golden brown, with dark brown spots. Adult male scorpions are 17.1mm long. Chaerilus pathom Lourenco & Pham differs from other species of Chaerilus variety because their body color is lighter. Besides, they have claws with 6-7 spikes .

According to Mr. Sac, the new discovery is not only meaningful in science but also has high practical value."Scorpion venom is a potential natural material for the current and future pharmaceutical industry , " said Sac.

From 2010 to 2013, Dr. Sac and colleagues conducted many surveys of invertebrate species in Phong Nha - Ke Bang (Quang Binh) and Ba Be (Bac Can) areas. During this time, the group discovered three new scorpion species for science: Vietbocap canhi Lourenco & Pham, 2010; Vietbocap thienduongensis Lourenco & Pham, 2012; and Euscorpiops cavernicola Lourenco & Pham, 2013.
