Kofi was born to mark 3 months after a new strategy was announced to increase the number of rare rhinos. This strategy aims to preserve the endangered black rhinos, raising the current number of 540 to 700 by 2011.
Black rhinos have experienced a serious recession across Africa in the 1970s and 1980s. Their population ranges from about 65,000 in 1970 to less than 2,500 in 1992.
