Scientific application to grow vegetables on Phu Quy island
In order to contribute to solving the shortage of vegetables and fruits of the island, Binh Thuan Center for Information and Technology Application and Progress has implemented the project.
More than 56 nautical miles from the mainland (120km), Phu Quy Island (Binh Thuan) annually faces a shortage of green vegetables every time the cargo ship moves to the island. Besides, due to harsh natural conditions, the quantity of vegetables produced in the island has not met the demand.

In order to contribute to solving the shortage of vegetables and fruits of the island, the Binh Thuan Center for Information and Technology Application and Progress has implemented the project " Application of technical advances in building and developing the model of production. vegetable production on fish land in Phu Quy island This project was coordinated by the Provincial Center for Scientific and Technological Progress of Information and Application to implement 30 models of vegetable cultivation in net houses and the mesh of salty wind screens as well as effect of rain, sun.
Ms. Mai Thanh Nga, Deputy Director of Binh Thuan Center for Science and Technology Information and Application, said that after the implementation, so far the project has built 15 models of net vegetable cultivation, 15 models grow vegetables with mesh arch. These models apply according to the process of safe vegetable production, with a net shielding system and techniques to create artificial moisture . have brought high efficiency in production. In addition, the project also organized training and field workshops for farmers and soldiers on the island to replicate this advanced vegetable production model across the island.
According to Ms Nga, the Center has also built 150 models of family vegetable gardens spread across 3 communes of Tam Thanh, Ngu Phung and Long Hai of Phu Quy island. Thus, the total production area under the project on the island district can increase by nearly 15,000 m 2 and harvest hundreds of tons of vegetables per year .
Developing the area of green vegetables on the island to move to replace the amount of vegetables that must be imported from the mainland to the island is a right direction, helping farmers to initially apply technical advances to agricultural production. In the past, Phu Quy had about 70% of vegetables used for daily consumption from the mainland, now only about 40%, people no longer afraid of lack of vegetables in prolonged rainy and stormy days. With the initial effectiveness of the model and towards vegetable production on the island, in the future, the model will be replicated for people on the island to improve daily meals, contributing to enriching vegetable sources.
