See artificial ear from human ribs

An English boy born without ears, was extremely happy to have implanted a pair of artificial ears born from his own ribs.

Kieran Sorkin, 9 years old, was born deaf and had only small lobes where ears should have grown. He was able to hear it by implanting a hearing aid in the previous surgery.

According to statistics, in England alone, there are about 100 babies born every year with only one ear or no ears like Kieran boy. This is the result of microtia , an ear deformity syndrome .

Kieran's mother said the boy is sociable and doesn't want to be discriminated against because of people. Kieran also wants to own an ear so he can wear glasses and headphones like any other normal person.

After years of waiting, Kieran was finally satisfied with the talent of doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

In the morning of the breakthrough surgery, consultant and surgeon Neil Bulstrode shaped Kieran's mother's ears. The surgical team then extracted cartilage from the nine-year-old boy's ribs, cut, shaped and stitched them together in a mold.

The upper blocks are then transplanted into the pocket in the skin and thanks to suction, they shape an ear on both sides of the boy's head.

Great Ormond Street Hospital is currently performing about 40 surgeries of this type every year, although most of them are only intended to replicate a lost ear.

Kieran's ear reconstruction surgery is only aesthetic and does not improve the patient's hearing. However, Mr. Bulstrode affirmed, it brings great psychological benefits, can change the direction of developing a patient's life thanks to help them more confident.
