Successfully prepared corn starch for adjuvants

The topic 'Research on the production of corn starch as an adjuvant', because the research team of the Pharmacy Department - Pharmacology, Phu Tho Pharmacy College has not only met the requirements of the pharmaceutical industry but also contributed enriching types of starch as excipients, while opening the direction for corn consumption for Phu Tho farmers.

Ms. Phan Thi Mai Huong, Chairman of the project said that in the pharmaceutical industry, starch is used as many tablet adjuvants, capsules . and there are many special characteristics such as starch without pharmacological effects. Particularly, do not irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, no unpleasant taste. Corn starch is relatively chemically inert, does not work with medicinal ingredients and does not alter the pharmacological effect of the drug.

In addition, it has a stable, non-fermenting nature, its density is almost equivalent to that of pharmaceuticals, so it is not separated when used as an adjuvant in the process of tableting. use as a padded, sticky, disintegrating, smooth excipient or excipient, depending on the ratio of ingredients added to the tablet.

Currently, Vietnam's pharmaceutical industry mainly uses cassava starch as adjuvant, so the production of cassava starch and research on processing higher-grade adjuvants from cassava starch also began to be interested. Other starches, including corn starch, have been used less so far. Therefore, the research group actively studied and analyzed the use of corn starch as an adjuvant to take advantage of available corn production in the province and contribute to enriching starch sources as adjuvant .

Through research, the project has developed the process of refining corn starch into pharmaceutical corn starch; assessing product quality according to pharmacopoeia standards and surveying some criteria in terms of preparation; build standards for pharmaceutical corn starch .

The experimental results initially showed that corn starch was used as an excipient for Paracetamol tablets, capable of causing disintegration and release of drugs (according to the dissolution test), which is equivalent to Amidon and crystalline. Tapioca. Especially, the whiteness is equivalent to Amidon and the cassava starch used, good sedimentation and tightness. The corn starch from food corn starch meets not only the criteria of pharmaceutical corn starch according to pharmacopoeia standards but also meets the requirements of preparation with the role of adjuvant, pharmaceutical use according to American Pharmacopoeia standards.

Dr. Ha Quang Loi, Rector of Phu Tho Pharmacy College, said that the project's success in addition to meeting the requirements of the industry as well as the school's training also contributed to enriching the types of starch made. excipients. Phu Tho is a mountainous province, maize is grown by farmers with a large area. This is a favorable basis for the production of pharmaceutical corn starch in the Pharmacy Industry or the university's testing center.
