China has just launched a satellite to collect scientific data about the earth's upper atmosphere and many people in the country think it is an unidentified flying object.

At around 9pm on May 13, people in many provinces in China see an unusually large and bright object in the sky. The object flew for less than 10 minutes and then disappeared.

A debate about bright objects erupted on the network. Many people thought it was a military equipment test, and some thought it was an unidentified flying object (UFO), the South China Morning Post reported.

Yesterday China National Space Science Center announced that the object was a rocket carrying many scientific devices. It was launched from the Xuchang Satellite Launch Center, Sichuan Province, to allow devices to collect data about the top air layers of the earth.

Based on these data, scientists will study electromagnetic fields, cosmic rays, sun's ultraviolet rays, meteorites and X-rays.

When the flight ended, the rocket released barium sulphate (BaSO 4 ), creating a cloud of ionic particles. The person below can see this ion cloud because it glows.

'We did a similar test in Hainan Province last month. The data that we collected in that experiment will be used to enhance the safety of electrical and aircraft networks', China National Space Science Center revealed.
