Sharing with Independent, Martinez said Mehlani had Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome , a disorder affecting eye development. She also had glaucoma (a glaucoma) when she was just one week old.

Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome affects the cornea and the pupil. Meanwhile, glaucoma damages the optic nerve, increases eye pressure and makes the eyes look larger. To avoid the risk of blindness, Mehlani had surgery at five months of age.

Successful surgery helps stabilize Mehlani's eyesight but does not change the shape of the eyes. Since then, in order to take care of Mehlani's eyes, Martinez has to take her to regular checkups. In addition, due to light sensitivity, sunglasses must be worn whenever you go outside Mehlani.

For Martinez, Mehlani's big eyes are a rare beauty. However, she was afraid that when going to school, her daughter would be teased by her friends and lose confidence and hate herself."What happens if you don't love your eyes anymore," she said on social media.

In response to Martinez's worries, hundreds of people sent words of encouragement to their mother and daughter."For me, it is a cute disease. You are doing well , " said one account. Others say, "She is perfect. Whatever happens, tell me that everyone has different things."
