The first successful transplant of hematopoietic stem cells

Ho Chi Minh City Blood and Blood Transfusion Hospital said that it has successfully performed hematopoietic stem cell transplants from the first blood-free peripheral blood in Vietnam.

Previously, on May 15, Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Blood Hospital received patients named QDA (25 years old, living in Ca Mau), diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia (JMML). , it was not possible to find a person with a matching stem cell (HLA) that was completely blood-related.

On July 1, the hospital launched a stem cell donation program at Tzu Chi Center (Taiwan, China). Nearly half a month later, Tzu Chi Center announced that it was found that a person who agreed to donate stem cells with HLA fits perfectly with the patient.

On September 20, the hospital performed the first hematopoietic stem cell transplant from blood-free peripheral blood in Vietnam for patients A. The progress of the transplant is closely monitored by the expert team. 20 years of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation experience of Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion Hospital.

Currently, patients have entered the 57th day of the transplantation process, the health of patients A. has gradually stabilized, the test results determine the rate of grafting (Chimerism) shows that 100% of cells are of stem cell donor.

Successful implementation of hematopoietic stem cell transplants from the first blood-free peripheral blood in Vietnam is considered an outstanding step in the treatment work, opening new directions and hoping to cure the disease. For patients with malignant diseases, it is impossible to find suitable blood-line stem cells.

Currently, there are a number of malignant hematological diseases (cancer), the only method for effective and possible treatment of the disease is heterozygous stem cell heterozygous for healthy people.

The Blood Transfusion - Hematology Hospital has successfully implemented hematopoietic stem cell heterogeneous techniques (co-transplantation) since 1995. However, the difficult problem is that many cases of patients cannot find people. for HLA matching blood stem cells. Meanwhile, in our country, there is no stem cell bank from voluntary donors. Therefore, some cases of patients must go abroad to find suitable source of stem cells.

It is known that the cost for each hematopoietic stem cell transplant in Vietnam is about 800 million VND, of which Health Insurance pays 60%. This cost is only one tenth of that of Singapore and one-fifth of that of Taiwan (China).
