The US Geological Survey (USGS) said a magnitude 8 earthquake occurred at 2:41 am (14:41 Hanoi time) in the area about 180km east of Moyobamba city, northern Peru.

The epicenter of the epicenter was at Loreto in the Amazon jungle, at a depth of about 105 km and shook the region of northern Peru. One person died and 18 were injured.
People in neighboring Ecuador said they could clearly feel the strong aftershocks from the earthquake that caused many buildings to shake.
