Sunlight creates a crescent-shaped shadow on the floor of an underground cave on Mars. This circular hole can lead to a lava tube, which is formed when lava freezes on the surface but continues to melt below. Finally the lava flows away, leaving an empty cave. The crescent moon in the photo taken by NASA's Mars MRO probe has helped scientists estimate the floor of the cave to be about 20 meters deep from the planet's surface.
