Toilets self-destruct pathogens for the poor.

The Bill and Melinda Gates - a fund to help the poor to have a healthier and healthier life - funded the Deshusses project of $ 100,000. Accordingly, in the near future, poor households can be assured of sanitation and quality of life.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), up to five million people suffer from cholera annually due to unsafe sanitation. In some poor countries, it is extremely difficult to build a standard toilet that can flush water and deliver waste to the environment because water resources are scarce and construction costs are too expensive. This is one of the reasons that cholera outbreaks, threatening human life.

Environmental engineer Marc Deshusses, designer of a new toilet.

Duke University environmental engineer Marc Deshusses, USA, has designed the toilet type to meet this urgent need for underdeveloped countries. This type of toilet is capable of destroying pathogens in waste while ensuring environmental sanitation and human health.

This toilet is based on the principle of decomposing organic matter to create a byproduct of methane. The waste is put directly into the tank made of PVC. Bacteria will decompose the organic substances present in the waste to produce methane. This amount of methane must not be released into the environment as it is commonly used to burn pathogens, bacteria, and viruses in waste.

In addition to organic waste, leftovers or rotting animal carcasses can also be added to the reservoir to create more methane.

'This toilet works similarly to the current septic latrine. However, especially, methane does not escape the environment but it is retained as the main fuel of bacteria and pathogens causing diseases such as cholera, trachoma, typhoid, water-borne disease. contaminated ' - Deshusses said.

It is known that the cost to build a toilet has a safe waste treatment system like above about 100 USD.
