Seismicist Wes Thelen works at the USGS Hawaii Volcanic Observatory, and since March 2013, around the Mauna Loa mountain area, earthquakes have occurred and this could be a sign that volcano is "waking up".
According to Thelen, these earthquakes were "not normal" but were not sufficiently grounded to conclude that Mauna Loa erupted and issued a red alert. However, to avoid possible catastrophes, scientists are closely monitoring the "most moving" of this giant volcano.
As one of the five volcanoes formed on the island of Hawaii, Mauna Loa is ranked as the world's largest volcano by area and number of sprays. This mountain called "Long Mountain" occupies half of Hawaii and becomes an attractive place for those who love adventure climbing.
Since 1843, Mauna Loa erupted 33 times. During the last eruption in 1984, the lava escaping from Mauna Loa covered the residential areas.
