Cosmological constant

But for the next few decades, we all know that the universe is not static, but actually expanding. Although considered to be the biggest mistake of Einsteins, the cosmological constant is still a fudge factor that changes the way spacetime interacts with dark energy, the form of energy that causes galaxies to grow faster, increasing the rate of expansion of the universe.

In 2016, scientists claimed to have directly detected ripples in the structure of spacetime, called gravitational waves. The discovery is a breakthrough in astronomy, changing the way we study the universe, and is a huge confirmation of Einsteins' efforts. 100 years ago, he predicted the presence of gravitational waves.

But for a while, Einsteins himself doubted their existence. In 1930, two decades after the publication of general relativity, Einsteins once intended to refute gravitational waves. In the end, they do exist, and of course his earlier judgment was correct.

Consequences of theories
