We are polluted light

An international study, published in the scientific journal Science Advances, shows that more than 80% of the world's population lives in "light pollution". In particular, 99% of the US and European population suffer from this situation.

The countries most affected by artificial lighting include: Singapore, Kuwait and Qatar. Countries like Chad, Central African Republic and Madagascar are less affected by light pollution.

Scientists from many countries including Italy, Germany, the United States and Israel have created a world map of light pollution using advanced methods to measure the brightness of the sky and satellite imagery High quality.

Dr. Christopher Kyba of the German Center for Geological Research explains: "Today's artificial light comes from a variety of sources. In particular, light from street lamps accounts for the majority. We are also influenced by light. in homes and offices, from car lights and advertising signs ".

"About 14% of the world 's population is almost no visual regulation suitable for the night. The sky and the environment where they live are illuminated artificially so they only use visual for the daytime at night" - Dr. Kyba adds.

The results of this study show that 20% of the European population and 37% of Americans do not use their night vision. Researchers warn that artificial light greatly affects nocturnal animals such as bats, monkeys "ai-ai" , beaver .

For humans, too much exposure to artificial light at night leads to sleep disorders and other health consequences.

Scientists recommend that we reduce the intensity or turn off night lighting devices , if they are not used or not needed. This contributes to energy savings while minimizing light pollution.
