In the 60s, the problem encountered by NASA astronauts was: they needed a good wristwatch to keep track of time while picking up rocks on the moon. Many high quality watches were brought to the test.

One had lost the glass surface under high pressure, the watch hands were deformed in the experimental furnace. Except for the Omega Speedmaster watch - with exceptionally strong apparatus - with the right material. Since then, the watch has been used by Gemini and Apollo spacecraft astronauts to astronauts on Skylab and the shuttle.

The apparatus of this watch, called Caliber 1861 , had a few changes over the years to improve accuracy, but it was still NASA's choice for each new mission. And it is still the most rigorously tested apparatus in history. It can even perform some tasks that engineers cannot foresee.

Using the clock on the Speedmaster , the Apollo 13 crew returned to Earth when they ran into trouble after turning off the computer to save energy.
