15% of laptops are broken in the first year

Research firm Gartner said screen errors have long been considered the most common problem in laptops. But this situation has changed because motherboards are emerging as a new problem

Survey results show that an average of one-fifth of notebooks break down parts such as connectors, motherboards and hard drives. Desktop computers also have similar weaknesses but are still more stable. Only 5% of desktop PCs purchased in 2005 - 2006 failed in the first year and the laptop was 15%. In addition, Gartner reported 22% of notebooks had hardware problems within 4 years of use.

According to Leslie Fiering, Gartner's deputy director of research, notebook manufacturers have improved design, reducing the risk of screen damage by adding hard materials to the case and screen edges, or where the distance between the keyboard and the screen when closing the laptop.

Meanwhile, the previous IT administrator could separately replace parts such as NIC (network interface card) or modem. Now, these parts are integrated right on the mainboard, so they have to change the whole board just to fix a certain error.

However, most computer companies are trying to produce more durable models, such as increasing shock resistance for hard drives, rubber lining between mid-point contacts on laptops and keyboards .

Gartner said it was difficult to analyze because most laptop makers refused to provide real data. Therefore, most of this statistic is based on information from big companies and warranty companies.
