1. Choose a hard bristle brush

Soft-bristled brushes should be used to prevent gum damage as well as root fall damage, advises Leena Palomo at Case Western Reserve University (USA). Hard brushes are for use on dentures, not human teeth. Choose a soft bristle brush to clean your mouth properly.

2. Brush your teeth too hard

If you use too much strength and muscles when brushing your teeth, even with a soft brush, you will lose weight, expose your teeth and wear enamel, says Alice Boghosian, a spokesman for the American Dental Association. When using the brush, do not press hard to make the entire brush."This often happens to patients with strong personalities," said Kellee N. Kattleman Stanton, owner of George Dental Group at Eagan. If you are using an electric brush, just turn it on and put it in your mouth without pressing it hard.

3. Do not follow the two-minute rule

Two minutes is the amount of time you need to spend to brush your teeth, whether using a regular brush or an electric brush, according to clinical associate professor Eugene Antenucci at New York Dental University.

4. Often skip the tongue

"Tongue nourishes a lot of bacteria from what you eat and drink," explains Stanton. Bacteria can spread to your teeth, increasing the risk of tooth decay, gingivitis and bad breath. So you should brush the entire face before and after.

5. Bring a brush when traveling

You may think that you are being protected against germs, but this actually causes a lot of bacteria to stick to your brush. You should not throw a brush into a dishwasher.
