Astrakhan scientists propose a unique way to deal with snoring and sleep apnea. They have developed a new mobile application to monitor the status of sleeping people. This application can identify sleep apnea problems, to diagnose and identify diseases.

>>>Monitoring the breath with radio transceivers

According to a survey conducted last year, nearly half of Russians over the age of 40 may snore while sleeping and are likely to suddenly stop breathing. Meanwhile, only 18% of these people heard about apnea, fewer were heard about diagnostic methods for apnea, and only a quarter of those asked to see a doctor. The majority of respondents did not consider the apnea to be dangerous to health.

However, experts warn - sudden apnea during sleep may lead to some diseases . In addition, due to apnea, it causes daytime sleepiness, depression, loss of concentration, impaired memory and intelligence.

Russian scientists from Astrakhan (on the Volga River) suggest a way to deal with sleep apnea and its main symptom is snoring. The project manager, Mr. Mikhail Erman himself, sometimes snores in his sleep. However, he did not want to go to a laboratory survey and suggested that such a survey could be conducted at home if using a normal mobile phone.

The mobile application developed by him and his team called Sleepdy records the breathing of the sleeping person on the recorder installed on the phone. When installing the application for the first time, users must undergo a small test to determine the person's apnea trend. After that, the user turns on the phone and presses the "Sleep" button on the screen. This device must be located at a distance of no more than 1 meter from the user.

In the morning, you can see the diagnosis. The application will tell whether the person who sleeps snores in his sleep and whether he stops breathing once. If the user suspects that he or she has apnea, he or she should go to the doctor for a more accurate examination.

Currently the Sleepdy application for mobile phones is being tested in one of Russia's nursing homes, which studies the medical aspects of sleep. Tests were conducted for several dozen people. Doctors have determined the ideal breathing during sleep. They compared that standard with patient follow-up results. On this basis, the medical staff will select a specific treatment regimen for each person.
