China has its own high-definition DVD standard

While the battle for the next generation high-definition optical disc format between HD DVD and Blu-ray has not yet come to an end, China unveiled its own standard format.

While the battle for the next generation high-definition optical disc format between HD DVD and Blu-ray has not yet come to an end, China unveiled its own standard format.

CH-DVD (China High Definition DVD) technology standard has just been officially introduced by China National Optical Memory Technology Research Center (OMNERC). However, instead of developing a completely new Chinese standard, it researched and developed CH-DVD based on Toshiba HD DVD technology.

In the process of researching and developing CH-DVD technology, OMNERC has received very positive support from the Chinese government. It is not clear whether the DVD Forum - the agency responsible for licensing high-definition DVD technology standards - is involved in the development of CH-DVD. But it can be said that CH-DVD development unit is one of the partners with DVD Forum and some other agencies that established the High Definition DVD Industry Association of China.

Analysts say CH-DVD is part of a rampant anti-piracy campaign in China. CH-DVD applies a high-tech content copy technology. However, this technology has not been revealed yet.

China's High Definition DVD Industry Association announced that next year the association will hold a major "launch ceremony" to promote the CH-DVD application to replace the current standard DVD format.

Customers in Western Europe are hardly concerned about the appearance of the standard CH-DVD format. But analysts say China 's adoption of green laser technology will have some impact on the cost of producing hardware in the two other formats, HD DVD and Blu - ray.

Assuming that the cost of CH-DVD devices is equivalent to HD DVD and Blu-ray, the manufacturers of the other two formats need to consider China's 'scale' of production. Currently cheap high-definition DVD players with China's HD DVD technology have started to spread and even appear on the price of goods. This may cause Blu-ray and HD DVD to reduce prices.
