China wants to grow vegetables on the moon

Chinese astronauts can take vegetables and oxygen from some bases on the moon in the future.

Deng Yibing, deputy director of the Chinese Astronaut Training and Research Center in Beijing, said the center's scientists tested the model to deliver oxygen, carbon dioxide (CO ₂ ), water, Plants and humans can survive in a closed environment on the moon.

Two test participants lived normally in a closed cabin with 300m ^{3 of} water, air and 4 vegetables. Vegetable plants absorb CO ₂ and then create oxygen to supply two people in the cabin. They also picked vegetables to cook meals, Xinhua reported.

This is the first time that Chinese scientists have tested the cabin's ability to support human life on the moon. Such cabins will be used in future satellite bases on earth. Their mission is to provide air, water and food for astronauts with the support of vegetables and algae.

"This test is extremely important for China's development of a manned space program," said Deng.

In the future, the Astronaut Training and Research Center will test animal breeding to provide meat and recycling trash with bacteria in the cabin. Scientists from Germany will participate in those tests.
