China's e-commerce is still facing many difficulties when not many mainland people are interested in shopping online, even though the number of Internet users in the world's most populous country has been surpassing the number of 100 million, according to a survey by Beijing Academy of Social Sciences.
Of the 2,376 people surveyed in five major cities, up to three quarters have never bought anything online, and about 10% make the most online purchases only once a month.
The type of goods purchased is also very limited: mostly entertainment services such as music or movies, in addition to phone cards or computer hardware and software.
The main reason is that Chinese people do not trust the quality of goods offered online. 'People prefer shopping in the store because if they are not satisfied with the item they buy, they can return it easily,' said Guo Liang, an Internet expert at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences.
