In May 2006, Dell announced it would start selling AMD-based servers after a long period of "loyalty" to Intel chips. At the same time, AMD has gained a lot of market share from Intel with the success of Opteron server chips. In September 2006, Dell began selling PC (desktop) products using AMD chips.

In response to AMD, Intel has launched new chip products, such as the Core 2 Duo and Xeon 5100 in the months of June and August 2006. However, the success was not as expected, making the world's largest chip maker forced to restructure the company and lay off 10,500 employees.

Expectations from the Dell Inspiron 1501 are quite large, but people still wonder if the Dell Inspirons line has enough memory to run Windows Vista when the operating system comes out early next year. Currently, the Dell Inspiron 1501 has many operating system choices: Windows XP Home Edition, XP Professional, or XP Media Center Edition 2005.
