Discover 44 new caves in Phong Nha-Ke Bang area

The newly discovered cave is located in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang area, most distributed in Dan Hoa, Hoa Son, Trung Hoa and Thuong Hoa communes (Minh Hoa district) with 33 caves.

In Quang Binh province, the research team of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park Management Board has discovered 44 new caves in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang area.

Initially, the research team approached, determined the coordinates and conducted a basic description of these caves.

The newly discovered cave is located in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang area, most distributed in Dan Hoa, Hoa Son, Trung Hoa and Thuong Hoa communes (Minh Hoa district) with 33 caves, followed by Son Trach commune ( Bo Trach district) with nine caves and finally Truong Son and Truong Xuan communes (Quang Ninh district) with two caves.

Through a survey of the research team of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park Management Board, 44 newly discovered caves belong to six different geological formations including La Khe, Bac Son, Mu Gia, Cat Dang, Muc Bai and Le Ninh; in which many caves are concentrated mainly in La Khe and Bac Son geological formations. These are two formations that occupy the largest and ancient geological age in Phong Nha-Ke Bang area.

The new caves are also mostly distributed at elevations ranging from 44-602m above sea level, of which the most common elevations are 200-350m.

Newly discovered dynamics are characterized by active wet types, seasonal activity and dormant dry dynamics. According to the observations and descriptions of the research team, stalactites in newly discovered caves include four basic forms: stalactite formations and rock formations, dispersed stalactites, stalactites created by water flow , stalactites due to accumulation of minerals.

Mr. Vo Van Tri, Head of Science and International Cooperation Department, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, member of the research team shared: Most of the newly discovered caves are only in the scope of research. rescue approach, locate, preliminary description. Therefore, it is necessary to have in-depth surveys and researches to clarify the value through which there are accurate judgments in the conservation and sustainable exploitation of this landscape and cave.

With the addition of the above 44 new caves, researchers have recorded a total of 405 caves discovered in Phong Nha-Ke Bang area, Quang Binh province.
