A species of mice over 80 cm long and not afraid of humans has been discovered in a forest in Papua New Guinea.

The BBC's ' Lost Land of the Volcano ' program discovered many animals that humans have never known, when they reached Bosavi crater in Papua New Guinea to film. Among these creatures are giant mice. They believe that they only live in the Bosavi crater, not in any other place.

' This is one of the largest rats on the planet. They are real mice, like the ones we have met in the sewers in the city , 'said Dr. Kristofer Helgen, an animal expert at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum (UK).

According to the BBC, the film crew trapped a giant rat. Its length from nose to tail is 82 cm and its weight is about 1.5 kg.

'I have a cat and it's about the size of this mouse,' said Gordon Buchanan, the cameraman in the group.

The mouse has a thick silver-brown fur. Scientists believe that the coat helps them survive in cold and humid weather in the crater. The location they discovered was about 1,000 meters above sea level.

The initial investigation showed that the giant rat belongs to Mallomys. This is a variety that includes many large-sized species.
