"The dwarfing may be a sign of declining health as you age," said study author Goya Wannamethee at the University of London. The decline in height usually occurs at the same time as "weakness", such as inactivity, weight loss, shortness of breath and arthritis.

Other research also found similar factors that cause heart disease and osteoporosis, such as high cholesterol, edema, and high blood pressure. Edema and blood lipids may reduce bone density, leading to reduced height.

Research results show that men need to exercise to maintain muscle health so they can stand upright. Yoga can also help increase height in women and men.

The researchers measured the height of more than 4,000 British men, first in 1970 when they were about 40-59 years old, followed by 20 years later. About 15% of men are reduced by 3 cm in height. Osteoporosis always accompanies this phenomenon.

Those who lost 3 cm or more also had a 60% chance of dying within 6 years, compared with those who still maintained their height.
